Transforming Perth

This report examines the potential number of new dwellings that could be accommodated in medium and high density scenarios in existing and often underutilised areas along Perth’s Activity Corridors. The broader purpose was to explore the opportunity to transform (or in many cases return) what are currently congested and car dominated roads into a vibrant series of High Streets and urban villages that are attractive places to live and work.

The Study builds on the ground-breaking Transforming Australian Cities report (2009) which found the potential to house an additional 1 – 2.5 million people along Melbourne’s existing tram and priority bus lanes, in an area equivalent to only 7% of Melbourne’s urban footprint. It also draws on the exemplary city-scale planning, visioning and engagement processes developed under South Australia’s Integrated Design Commission

Transforming Australian Cities – A Must Read

“Update: 30/8/13. Kevin Rudd has announced if the ALP are re-elected on September 7th, they will establish a Minister for Cities. We welcome Federal Leadership in cities and hope everyone who views the following lecture walks away with the same impression we did: increasing density in appropriate areas – distributed thoughout entire metros – increases localised economic opportunity away from the central cores of Australia’s cities.

National Planning Award – The Winners

Two winners of the prestigious Australian Award for Urban Design were announced last week (11 August) at the Hyatt Hotel in Canberra in a prelude to the Built Environment Meets Parliament conference.

Transforming Australian Cities Takes Out Prestigious Planning Award

A plan to transform Australian cities, developed by the City of Melbourne and Department of Transport, has won the Australian Award for Urban Design.

Lord mayor Robert Doyle, says the plan, driven by professor Rob Adams and his team of urban designers, was a well researched argument for intensification of residential developments along public transport corridors. 19 August, 2009
